When my mother-in-law first gifted my husband and I a large box of handmade burp cloths, I thought she was insane. As first-time parents, we were wondering how we were going to be able to go through all those burp cloths with just one baby. Well, it only took about two full days after bringing baby girl home before we had to do a full load of laundry with just burp cloths. No one tells you how many babies go through! This simple little sewing project is an easy one to crank out so you can make a whole stash of these in about half an hour. I found some fun print fabric, but you could use whatever you have on hand. I even made some of these for some friends that just started fostering and they loved them. Plus, you can use them for other things as your little one grows.

Step 1: Cut Out Fabric

The first step in this how to make baby burp cloths sewing tutorial is to by washing, drying, and pressing your fabric. I find this makes it easier to cut as the fabric is nice and flat, plus the process acts as a preshrink for your fabric so your stitches don’t get messed up the first time you wash your baby bip, which you will do often. Once you have done that, use the included free pattern to cut out your fabric. If you have a rotary cutter and cutting mat, you can even choose to cut both at the same time. I am using scrap fabric, so have decided to cut the fabrics separately. If you are cutting both at the same time, lay down the patterned fabric flat on the cutting mat and then place the soft fabric on top.
