Britain’s most visited national park is a hillwalking mecca. Every year, millions excitedly flock here to wander the fells – the Northern English term for hills and mountains, derived from the Viking ‘fjall’. And who can blame them? Nowhere on our shores is there such a concentration of accessible and varied hillwalking potential. In the valleys, Lakeland’s buzzing towns and quaint villages are well-stocked, with cafes, hotels, gear shops and inns. For those enamoured with summits, ridges, tarns and a good pub for afterwards, the Lake District is solid gold. In this Collection, we reveal five classic walks in the national park, with something for everyone. Catbells makes for a thrilling introduction to the fells for little ones; the dramatic Great Gable delivers arguably some of the finest views in England; iconic Blencathra serves up a classic ridge scramble; the Corridor Route offers an entertaining and quieter way up Scafell Pike; while Far Eastern giant High Street offers serenity for fell walking connoisseurs and their four-legged friends. For further inspiration, at the end of each Tour description is a short film following BMC ambassador and globe-trotting archaeologist Mary-Ann Ochota, as she takes on these great Lake District Walks. As with all of the UK’s mountain regions, the Lake District is prone to extremely changeable weather. ‘We had four seasons in a day!’ is a regular sentiment from those descended from the fells. Quality, waterproof hiking footwear, warm layers and a waterproof shell are all essential, as is sun protection during the warmer months. There are no amenities once you leave the valleys behind, so take plenty of food and drink. In full winter conditions, these routes become much more challenging and require mountaineering experience and equipment. The Lake District’s popularity means that you’ll find no shortage of places to stay, with everything from luxurious spa hotels and idyllic guesthouses to charming hostels and dramatically situated campsites. Getting about the Lakes by public transport is straightforward during the summer months, with various bus services around the national park running from the mainline train stations at Oxenholme (near Kendal), Penrith and Carlisle. However, you’ll need to drive to the start points for the High Street, Great Gable and Scafell Pike routes, though you could tackle the latter from Seatoller, about half an hour’s walk from Seathwaite Farm. We wish you many fine days on the Cumbrian fells.

The perfect mountain in miniature, Catbells is adored by many. Its camel hump summit hogs the limelight in views across Derwentwater, despite being more diminutive than its neighbours, at just 1,480 feet (451 m). If you were to design a fell to be the ideal introduction to hillwalking, it would look…

Few can claim to know Cumbria’s high places as well as Alfred Wainwright did. The great hillwalker’s Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells changed the fabric of the Lake District forever. Of all the myriad routes up the 214 hills and mountains featured in his masterpieces, it was Blencathra via Halls…

England’s highest mountain is the crowning glory of the Scafells, a range of rugged peaks thrust high above a complex tangle of glacier-carved volcanic terrain. The upper ramparts are true mountain country, with impressively towering crags, boulder-strewn crests and a sense of desolation at odds with…

Rising above all else in Lakeland’s serene Far Eastern Fells, High Street is a mountain with a rich history. It’s named for the Roman road that runs along its broad main ridge, connecting the Roman forts of Brocavum (near Penrith) and Galava (Ambleside). The fell is also known as Racecourse Hill, as…

There will always be debate around which is Lakeland’s finest mountain. Great Gable, its impressive form unmistakable from so many summit vantage points, is almost always considered in such a discussion. While Helvellyn and Blencathra flaunt the best walker’s ridges and the Scafell massif boasts the…
