Treatment for Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism is a condition caused by under secretion of thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland. Most commonly, symptoms include coarse skin and hair, cold and dry skin, puffiness around the eyes, and slow heart rate. Risk factors for hypothyroidism include being over 50 years old, female gender, obesity, and exposure of the neck to radiation. Confirmation of the condition is determined by a physician. Currently, the drug of choice for treating hypothyroidism is levothvroxine.

Starting doses of this drug vary due to a person's age and cardiac disease status. Once started on levothyroxine therapy, individuals with this condition should be re-evaluated every 6 weeks until they are stable. Changes in the dose of levothyroxine are based on blood tests performed at the doctor's office. As patients age, the dose of levothyroxine needed may decrease, so it is important to receive regular physician checkups. The same brand or generic version of levothyroxine should be used throughout therapy, since changes can affect blood levels.

Compliance with. drug therapy for the treatment of hypothyroidism is important, as prolonged hypothyroidism without treatment can lead to osteoporosis, hyperlipidemia, and heart disease. City councilor Mary Sue Rowland said the master plan should define where businesses are welcome and where areas should remain residential. She said a clear definition would avoid conflicts between neighborhoods and businesses on a case-by-case basis. For example, a downtown lawyer wants to redevelop a house on Conner Street into offices and the preservation alliance is opposing the move. The council will consider that zoning request Tuesday as well.

"We need to define how we expand and allow businesses to know what is the appropriate, place for doing business," she said. "We need to quit struggling over every issue as it comes before us." John Elliott, president of the preservation alliance, said downtown has needed a strategic plan for years. He said all of the groups involved in downtown need to compromise to make sure the best plan is achieved. "My hope is this plan and process are handled effectively in terms of not just generating ideas, but in having credible, openminded listening from all stakeholders," he said. "We'll end up with a plan where no stakeholder considers they are getting everything they want, but they also won't lose on everything." Elliot also said the plan will be balanced and has many positives, for each stakeholder group.

"We don't want a plan that will be sitting on a shelf," he said. He said downtown will need the plan to keep up with business development on Indiana 37. "We are a showplace for all of Hamilton County, because we do have a neat historical downtown that is very vibrant," he said. "We want to keep things that way, and we don't want to be lost in the shuffle with all of the development on the east side (of Noblesville)." Tony Van Tassel, whose family owns Noblesville Clock Company at 966 Conner said the plan will mean nothing unless parking is improved. He complained that the City Hall parking lot is closed during the building's expansion scheduled to be completed in October 2006 and it's made parking in downtown worse.

"Whatever we do is completely irrelevant and negated unless we solve the parking issue," Van Tassel said. "That is the bottom line. He hopes city officials don't take the $144,000 proposed for the strategic plan and "throw it in the way of an ad agency where you don't get top dollar for advertising." "There are so many things we could do here. We could turn this town into a history museum if we wanted to," Van Tassel added, citing characteristics such as downtown and Potters Bridge to the north on Allisonville Road.
